hi, completely new to all this forum discussions and hopefully contains more credible information than half of the internet so here it goes...considering a new 18ftish cruiser for little weekend trips etc... with my the kids and wifey. its advertised with an ultra long shaft outboard, good age, fair price but how do i know if its the right outboard for the boat? The boat is a sunstar 18 how would i go about working out if the new 4 stroke, 6hp tohatsu is the right engine and how could i expect for it to perform?

A 6HP motor on that boat is going to push it very slow. Also it sounds like a motor for a sailboat.

Hi, hmmmm.

Welcome to iboats. :)

I think Sunstar is a sailing vessel. Does it have the outboard now? Why would you want to replace it?

I am going to move this to the correct Forum. Good luck. :)

I see the Sunstar 18 is a pocket cruiser sailboat. 6HP is plenty for that boat. I used to run a 4HP on my Catalina 22' for what is referred to as a "kicker". If it's 2 cylinder that would be nice too but it may only be a 1 cylinder. Now if it's a 4 stroke that's even better because you will use gas for fuel without having to mix oil as in a 2 stroke. Also, the 4 stoke will be quieter and smoother, qualities you want in a sailboat. As to shaft length, longshafts are common for sailboats and an extra long shaft will be nice for when you are in choppy water. The boat pitching up and down with waves can lift a shorter motor nearly clear of the water, up and down, in and out. My guess is from the way you describe the ad the seller is quite proud of the motor as it is probably a nice fit to the boat.

Now here's the deal. You just signed up to ask this question. It's your first post and if you got the answer you want we may never see you again. But,not you. Your going to follow up, post pictures and continue to use the forum, right?

ahh my three kings of the orient, thanks for your replys. It is a pocket cruiser (just like a Leisure 17), 4 berth, sailing boat, great little manageable size but yes i would like to supplement my lack of sailing knowledge and ability with a petrol driven motor! The deal could be (if i decide to go for the engine as well) a tohatsu 6hp ultra long shaft (25") 4 stroke outboard with remote fuel tank. Just want to make sure that its not a rogue engine hung off the back for the sake of the sale of the boat, I drop it in the water and find out its no good. Good to hear about Jim Hawkins experience with the 4hp.

Speak soon...pictures and more juice on the way.

What was your fuel consumption like Jim? 12ltr external tank on this SunStar.

The Yamaha T8 is a fantastic sail motor.

Just because the motor is a nice match for the boat says nothing about what shape it's in or how it will run, you will need to have that demonstrated. A small motor like that should run all day, sipping gas if you run at a slow cruising speed and don't try to power the sailboat like a motor boat.
