Convert Digital Camera To Thermal Imagery

I have several older digital cameras, and was reading up on converting one to take thermal imagery pictures. I have found links to making infrared cameras, but infrared is different than thermal. Has anyone ever attempted to make a thermal conversion? Do they actually work? Know of any good links? Any help appreciated.

Well i can tell you when i was in the Army, and on the Abrams tanks they had thermal sights. I was told that the way they worked was the sight got cooled to a far lower temp than any sournding items. And would then show them either in a black hot or white hot image on the display. I dont know how it could be done to a regular camera.
