I have a small pontoon with a late 80's 9.9 mariner out board. It is a bit on the under powered side from what I would like at least with more than two people in the boat. I can find a couple of 25 hp Mercury outboards 25 hp with electric start but they have a tiller instead of being set up for remote. Can anyone give me an idea of what I would need for the conversion and if I can use the remote shift/throttle and steering I have attached to the 9.9 mariner?

I am pretty sure about this but you will need to double check with serial #s as to what parts will interchange. If the mariner is a mercury built motor you can take all the linkages off and transfer them to a 25. Leave the upper timing rod with their respective motors. You can then convert your 9.9 to a tiller with the 25 parts. BUT Like I said you will need to double check the parts for both motors to make sure.

Back in the days of the cable systems we did it quite frequently, especially on OMC engines. Just left the tiller handle on the engine, pushed up and connected the remotes with adapters to mounting points provided on the engine. Steering was a connection to a hole in the center of the tote handle. You could do the same with a Teleflex single cable. Deadman could mount to the transom with an after market bracket that marine retailer's sell. Same company might sell the cables and adapters for throttle and shifter too. You may have a tilt bracket tube cable assy that would fit your engine whereby the outer steering tube would mount to the starboard side of the tilt tube and the center would protrude out the Port side with an S bracket that connected to the front center of the engine.

Check Iboats for needed part. Check them for the control also, it's a Commander 2000 and get yours with a wiring connector that fits your engine if fitted with a remote connector. If not you would have to "cut and paste".

^^^ You cannot just buy cables and think it's going to work. There is no comparison between the merc and omc motors completely different throttle and shifting set-up. The mercury 6/8/9.9/15/18/20/25 hp outboards have the shifting and throttle in the tiller. The tilt tube for steering will be already installed in the 25 hp. You need the correct parts to make it work, the controller for the 9.9 will work fine for the 25 no need to spend the money on a new one. The parts should swap easily
