Hi guys, I have a very quick and simple question... Is it possible to convert a carburetor with high and low speed needles to a needle free carburetor? ... The outboard is a 1956 30hp Johnson-evinrude. Thank you and see you at the lake:)

Edited... I guess my question should be more like needle free motor, eliminate the carb and install a different type of carb that uses no needles... is that possible?

Hi thx, Why?... I have used this motor for a couple of years now... I have replaced carburetors 2x and this last few days I went thru pretty much every part and cleaned/replaced,etc... But I can not get the needles adjusted right ever!, very frustrating, I would like to keep the motor (is a piece of art) but not have to deal with the adjusting of the needles (i did not loose them lol) Thank you.

As far as I know Carb = Needles and that's all there is to it. To have to keep adjusting I think there is something else wrong. Have you actually replaced the needles ???

Once adjusted, the needles should not need constant readjustment. Are your packing nuts tight enough to prevent the needles from vibrating loose?

yes, needles have been replaced 2x... I know that the main problem is with the needles because every time I adjust them the motor runs different, for instance this last time (today) I cleaned the carb and reseted the needles, the motor now trolls beautifully but will not run fast and vice versa. Anyway the point is the adjustments always change the performance but it can never be right, So A needle free carb would be great to have because there is really nothing else wrong with the motor.

Did you put packing nuts in? I use 3 or so on the bigger carbs. If you use 3 and snug down the threaded collar around the needle it should work great. if they still loosen up there's a another problem. Maybe a stripped thread or something.

That makes a lot of sense to me. Check it out.

I just checked the manual and it shows 2 packing nuts on the top low speed needle and 4 (yes 4!) on the bottom high speed. Huh. Also, I have the parts manual if you want it. If yes, PM me the model # and your email address.

I'll take a carb any day that has adjustable needles over fixed jets. You can dial them in anytime needed.

We agree! I always wonder if my fixed jets are working 100% whereas with the needle one can always tell!

Well, for those who have an issue with adjusting needles, maybe you can look into replacing the carb with one from a later 28 or 33. Those may or may not have the fixed oriface in the high speed. I know the later 40's did.
l agree with samo_ott and boobie. The adjustable needles are an advantage, if you happen to take your boat to different altitudes, because performance on the fixed oriface will varry on different altitudes and also fuel mix can also affect the performance as well.
I have a '59 35hp with the adjustable high speed and I think I would prefere to leave it factory.
