Convert tiller to remote?

In the process of looking for a replacement motor for my boat I have come across several short shaft 25hp Mercurys with tiller handles. I would prefer a short shaft because my boat requires one. I know, I know, I could get a long shaft but I would have to get a jack plate to raise the motor and that would be more expense. Now the question is, can a Mercury tiller handle be converted to remote operation at a reasonable price? Does any place have kits to do this? I have already got the controls for a Mercury. I am looking for 1980 through 2000 year motors.

Kab,
Did you finish the conversion? Do you have the old parts...and want to sell? I am buying a 99 25hp remote that I need to convert to a tiller.

No, I haven't. I'm still looking for a short shaft 25 HP remote. I've found several long shaft remotes but they were newer models and their price is more than I want to pay. Still looking for that perfect motor. HaHa.

Do you have a console, steering cable and a contol box with control cables? You can get a kit from a mercury dealer to change over for about $150 and it has instructions with it. Good luck.
