Convertible Top Care

Hello All,

I just bought Mrs. DJ a slightly used 2010 Mustang Convertible. She has been a very good girl this year.

Not her first Stang but her first convertible.:D

The top (tan) has a few black marks here and there where it folds. Plus, I'd like to protect it from the AZ sun.

I've seen mentions of 3M 303 here. Which products (cleaner/protectant) exactly?

Any other products that work well?

Thanks.

Re: Convertible Top Care

I own a 1997 Mustang convertible with the tan vinyl top and just replaced it this year($800), but it's had some small black bad spots right where it folds for several years. Best you can do is keep it in a garage out of the sun, but I believe about 5 to 8 years is about the best you can hope for. I asked the guy who replaced my top about anything he might recommend to protect and preserve it and he just said "mild soap and water with a soft brush, keep it clean and out of the sun". I've been rubbing some of that 303 stuff on the top right where it folds to maybe prevent cracking, but I'll bet in 5 years it'll be showing the wear! Good Luck!

Well after having many british s**tbox convertible cars over the years, this is what I found worked for me. On cloth type tops I used Woolite in high concentration and a good soft brush. Didn't dry the fabric out as many harsh cleaners will. When dry, I then ScotchGuarded. Do NOT get ScotchGuard on plastic windows! The trick with cloth type tops is to keep them as clean as possible. Dust and sand in a folded top is death.
On vynil tops, I grew fond of Simple Green followed by 303.

Takes a very confident man to buy the missus a red mustang convertible.

Now that's funny.:D Actually, she won't ride in it with the top down unless I'm with her, as it should be.;):D

As others have said, a mild detergent with warm water and a soft cloth/brush and keeping it out of the sun.

No matter what you do, its still just a piece of cloth and it will wear along the fold / creases. In the AZ sun I suspect you will be replacing it in 7 to 8 years. Tis the nature of owning a rag top. (Yes I have one and have had several in the past.)

yep, anything that's petroleum based or greasy will attract dust/dirt (or anything where you have to wipe off excess). mild soap, soft brush and water are the safest to use. keeping it covered is the only way to make a top last long.
