Converting 1992 Spl Johnson 28 hp long to short

I'd like to convert my 1992 Johnson SPL 28 horsepower long shaft to a short shaft. Does anyone have any idea of how complicated this might be and whats involved? I've been using this on my boat that requires a short shaft. I do believe its slowing me down some. Thanks for any help, Ken

At a minimum, you'll need:

1. New driveshaft. (requires lower unit diassembly)

2. New mid section.

3. Shift rod?

The mid-section will be fine - just remove the 5-inch extension section. They did not actually make a short shaft 28 in 1992, so you'll need to find a short shaft from something else. I believe an older 25 hp driveshaft (based on the 31.8 cui block) will be compatible. Best to take your 28 shaft to a dealer and see if you can match it up with one that is exactly 5-inches shorter. I did this to one a month ago or so, a 1988 28SPL.

You can cut the water tube 5-inches shorter, and you can cut 5-inches out of the shift rod.

I have a similar problem but the other way round - I wish to convert a Long to an Extra Long on an older model Honda BF15A. Will it be difficult and expensive - are there any other options?
