Hello, question for the experts. I have a 1984 Evinrude 9.9 hp. Saw videos that it can be converted to a 15 hp just by changing the carb? Yes or no? Thank you.

yes.---First step is to find the carburetor.----There are also numerous threads here on how to do this simple procedure.

Ok thank you. Finding the carb might be a little tough. Do you what years were the same? 84-?

74 to 92 were the same basic motor 9.9 and 15 HP------1993 they went to a bigger bore., more displacement.---------Now a 9.9 may be more than 9.9 HP and a 15 may be a bit less than 15 HP.----There is marketing and decals involved.

You might get a couple hundred more RPMs running wide open if the prop is correct for the load, which technically does translate to more HP. Anything less than wide open and you have the same restricted carb as the 9.9.

Remember the old saying: "There's no replacement for displacement"

Actually the 84 models show the round tuner for the 15 HP models.------The instructional video must have missed that detail !!!----Just picked up a 1992 model 15 HP.-----Will be taking it apart for rebuild.----We will see if it has the round tuner.

I said up to ABOUT 84 shared the same tuner. 88 and later 9.9/15 hp share the round tuner.
I apologize that I don't have the manual for every motor ever made.

The 92 model shows a stubby square tuner.-----Parts books are all on line.-----Just a few clicks to check this all out !!

2 different round tuners made one short which is the later one and the longer round one which is earlier. Your 92 has the shorter round tuner on it. Easy to prove when you take it apart. I don't need a parts manual for that

Well for the amount of manuals you obviously own that is not a surprise.
Will it hurt your ego when you find out your 92 15hp has a short round tuner?

Bring your motor over in pieces / nuts & bolts.-----I put it together for you.----No manual needed.----Think I have a couple of 84 models in the herd.

Lol. I’d say you could probably do it blindfolded. I’ll be right over. Where do you reside? Lol
