There are allot of ways to mount the transducer. Above, you will see what I did. Basicly a big bobber. Make sure your lcd screen can handle the temps you will be fishing at.

Actually you can see what's under the ice before drilling the hole. Carry a gallon jug of water with you. Pour some on the ice and push the transducer in it. Works for me. If you carry an ice pick you can even chisel a small divot, fill it with water and set the transducer in it. We use that method all the time up here in the tundra -- especially if you are unfamiliar with the body of water and are working from lake maps to locate structure.

Well thanks Silvertip......Season opens here in Feb if we get any ice ....I will surely have to try that....my buddies will be envious if it works for me and I find the hotspots in only a couple of drills....sometimes we poke enough holes that the ice surface looks like swiss cheese.!!!!

About the only time this technique doesn't work is if you happen to be shooting through a patch of porous ice or ice that has lots of air bubbles in it. In the case of porous ice, you are advised to make tracks in some other direction. Porous ice is not safe ice.
