Ok just rebuilt my 1979 Mercruiser 140 gm 181 engine, and have decided to change the distributor to the est ignition, my question is I have the est distributor and the coil and the wiring harness with it, just not sure how the wiring harness is connected, it has a black wire and a red wire from the harness, Im assuming the red is to the positive key turned on power, and from a diagram i found it says the black is for tach lead, my question is where does the shift inturptor connect to the coil, there is also a plug from the coil to the distributor and it is hooked up correctly, just not sure how to wire in the shift inturuptor. also just curious, am i correct in that looking at the front of the distributor the front left is plug 1, then the rest go in firing order. Thanks for your help and if i need to get a picture i can to help anyone with it. And i know it would probably be easier to use the conversion kit, but i already bought the est distributor and parts.

Thanks
Shane

Below is a wireing diagram for the 3.0 with EST distributor. The shift interrupt switch is not connected to ground the coil out, but instead to provide power (from purple wire) to ignition bypass circuit (white/green wire at dist).

Dave

Ok the harness i have only has a red and black wire i know the black is the tach lead so is the red wire i have the purple wire in your diagram newport, and where is that wire actually coming from the power when key is active, if so i think i have it down, I will have to find a plug for the other plug on my distributor, as i only have the wire from the coil to the distributor, and from tha looks its the far left on the 3 wire plug that gets hooked to the inturupter switch, and also other side of inturupt to the keyed power wire. does this sound correct.
Thanks
Shane

did your distributor also come with the timing tool?
its the small tool that plugs into the 4 pin side of the distributor

Sounds like your on the right track - red wire from your new harness to purple (hot when key is "on") wire on you engines wire harness, and black wire to tach.

Your going to have to get the timing tool. You will need it to connect the interrupt to the distributor and to properly time the engine after the new EST distributor is installed.

Dave

if you look on the diagram above you will see two leads going from the dist to the ign coil. they were originally brown and pink I think. they thoughtfully negleted to label them. both of the leads will go to the coil primary. on the two pin dist connector. the pin to the left while looking at it we will call pink. the pin on the right we will call brown. now we are going to orient the ign coil so the sockets are facing you with the secondary tower to your left. the pink wire goes to the lower left socket the brown to the lower right. you will need a battery feed wire from a 12V(original resistor wire bypassed) ign voltage source. this will go to the socket on the upper right with the coil tower still on your left. the tach feed will come from the socket on the upper right. sounds like you did not get all the parts in the kit.
