Converting steering components

The steering on my deck boat was very stiff so I plan on replacing the entire unit from the steering wheel to the cable going back to the motor. It had a long flat unit behind the console, should I replace it with the same or is there a better gear type unit to use. I would appreciate any terminology help I could get and I was wondering if there was anything especially complicated in hooking up the steering cable in the motor area.

Jim

Re: Converting steering components

Hi.. Sounds like you currently have a rack & pinion setup...

Both types, rotary and rack & pinion helms, work fine and steering wise, there really is'nt an advantage to either.. The new thing is "No Feedback" steering systems, available in either the rotary or rack type of helm... The feature is supposed to help eliminate steering torque/pull at the wheel...

Basicly it all comes down to "will the helm fit under the console?" Rotary helms tend to be a bit more compact, ie: fit in tight consoles better..

The motor area... Just to be aware, in some cases, not all, the motor has to be un-bolted and taken off, or slid over on the transom to feed the cable thru the tilt tube on the engine.. The need to un-bolt the engine has to do with any tight turns of the cable close to the engine.. Hopefully you won't have to do that..

When all goes well, it's a fairly easy job.. Good luck..

http://www.teleflexmorse.com/Marine/default.asp?ID=17
