Just thought what you guys thought would be the cheapest way to convert a tiller 25 Johnson to steering with a steering wheel. Hydraulics cost so damn much. I currently have it rigged up with some coated galvanized wire, and some pullies hooked up to the sided of the motor. Not very sophisticated but work. Just wanted a more dependable way to turn my boat.

I forgot to say that I already have throttle and shift levers. Throttle works perfect but shifter doesn't. Any ideas for that too.

cable and pulley was the standard for many years and works well if set up right. when you say the shifter doesn't work, are you talking about the control lever? or the actual lever on the side of the motor?

When i shift into Foward you have to reach back and manually shift it into foward, because it doens't lock into gear. same with reverse sometimes. I've messed with the tension screws and it will either give me foward or reverse but not both at the same time.

is this when you are trying to shift with the control lever? or just the lever on the side of the motor?

When trying to shift the control lever. After shifting the control lever, i have to manually reach back and shove the shifter into foward because the control lever won't get it all the way into foward.

Hoss....your question on the shift lever should be posted in the John/Rude Repair forum....but since I'm here......how old are the control cables and what kind of control is it? Any OMC control with cables should work if the cables are adjusted correctly. Some generic controls and cables need adaptors to make them work.

Is this a two lever control or a single lever?

Are the control cables long enough to go back to the engine and make a loop...about 2' in diameter...into the engine?

EDIT: Can you post a year or model number of the engine?
