converting to thru-hull exhaust

hello everyone. Okay, so here's the deal. I have a 76 Ford 302 Mercruiser in my boat. I was wondering if I could convert it from regular (comes out of outdrive) exhaust to thru-hull exhaust. Any help would be appreciated thanks.<br /> Will

Sure..... Why Not.....<br />Cut a couple holes in the transom,+ Run some pipes out the back....

Search this board for keywords, I've seen several posts related to this project. I think in the final analysis it's only a sound improvement with no performance gains.<br /><br />My "69" V8-327 sure sounds good thru the hull, but it can get anoying on those evening booze cruises.

I thought of the same thing whe I rebuilt my '76 302/888 last year. If you really want to do it right, try www.hitekmarine.com.au . They make a set of stainless lighter weight manifolds for our engine. The're not that much more expensive than good quality log manifolds. If I hadn't just bought new logs last year and wanted the sound of thru-hulls, I would be all over a set of them. I know someone who has them and loves them. He says they are much lighter weight and flow much better. <br /><br />BTW, these are made so that you can go thru-hull, or down the Y pipe, your choice.

You sure could but you'll gain about the same amount of speed if you paint flames on the side of your boat.All kidding aside alot of money for little gain and more noise.

I would like something selectable, like a Corsa system, but the price is a bit steem. Sometimes I would just like to hear the grumble of a winding small block throuhj open exchaust, but be able to quiten it down the other 75% of the time. To expensive to do just for the sound.<br /><br />I think one would see some gains over the basic logs with the hi-tek system. It is 100lbs or so lighter and is less restrictive. If the 302 is built well, it couldn' hurt. I don't think my engine with its 2bbl would beefit much on the breathing side. Now if it had a 4bbl and some 351 heads.....

please don't do it all we need on the lake is more noise. well if you really want to go ahead, but i've seen boats that are all show and no go...

If you don't want to lay out the bucks for a switchable exhaust, consider using a muffler exhaust tip such as Gil Power tips, I installed these on my WellCraft with 350 mag, When at idle the exhaust note is mellow, and sounds tuned ,once on plane you don't hear a thing all the noise is behind you. I was able to complete my system for less than $400 CDN, got tips and rubber exhaust hose off e-bay, made 4 90 degree elbows from 6061 t-6 aluminum tube, 16 stainless clamps, and I cut the holes myself in the transom using 4" holesaw and 1/2" drill, I was quoted about $1600 from a local marina for the same job, If you do a search on "Thru Hull Exhaust" you will find a previous reply of mine explaining in detail what I did to install my system.

My crazy uncle, whom I inherited my 1969 327V8 from had a plant maintenance shop make a pair of Stainless steel pipes that simply turned down the thru the hull exhuast and took it to the water line. These piped simply pushed into the hole and a simple clamp help them against the transom. This made the ole boat quiter when simply cruising and when up on plane it was quieter in the boat but still sounded swell. Uncle Franks Motto, was Poor Folks got Poor Ways. He lived by his motto.
