do you mean outdoors or inside fireplace? I love to have a bar-b-que and cook over an open firepit outside. "how do you want your chicken, raw or burnt" :D

Don't cook in the fireplace, but I do cook on top of my woodstove from time to time. Usually it is a crock of baked beans, once or twice during the winter. They seem to smell so much better cooked on top of the WS than they do in the oven. And they are easier to get at to sneak a taste here and there.

After hurricanes, when we don't have any power, we've cooked in our fireplace for as long as two weeks. All I can say is that it makes you appreciate what your ancestors had to do every day. I think it tastes better over an open fire, but it sure is a lot of trouble. Sort of a limited menu as to what you can cook too, unless you have dutch ovens and stuff made for cooking over campfires.

Been there done that. It's a great way to go. Oak is one of the nicer woods for steak and pork. Hickory is good too if you can find it. Get one of those grilling baskets that fold over the food and clamp shut and you can do steak, pork chops, hamburgers, chicken. It's a whole site better than standing outside to get that grilled flavor. Boy, I sure do miss that fireplace. :(
