The impeller is new, the head gasket is new and the cooling passages are clear.
I can't figure out why it has very little water flow??
It cools at idle good but run it fast it gets hot.
The pump housing is old and the gaskets are new.
Tried a hose direct to the water pick up and it flows good.
The stainless insert in the pump is in fair shape. No deep grooves.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

The first item to check is the intake screen (part # 0396200 screen and plug) under the cav plate. It's fairly fine and often is clogged and behaves as you mentioned. The pickup does not reside in the "normal sides location". If the lower is already off you may want to do a drill/barrel test before and after cleaning the screen as noted below.

--------------------------------
Did it overheat and fry the head gasket. Are we sure the head isn't badly warped and both block and head were super clean.
If you haven't already, re-torque the head bolts. Doing the pattern slightly loosen a bolt then torque(to eliminate sticktion). Move onto the next bolt, etc.

I'm not a fan off the impeller housing since they lack a separate driveshaft seal... Sooo, You may need a new housing if any of the upper plastic is worn.

the pump attempts to minimize the driveshaft parasitic loss by making a good seal from a quality impeller - the top and bottom of the impeller must have good ribs/thickness. Impeller plate AND the Stainless cup must be excellent. so you may want to do the kit.

You may as well - in a barrel- remove the thermostat cover, remove thermostat and start motor to see what kind of flow you are getting. As you rev up motor, it should come out and shoot a bit past the lower cowl. If the motor got hot, it could have easily melted thermostat components, not allowing free movement at higher speeds.

When you remove the lower, connect the top of the driveshaft to a good cordless drill on high. Lower the LU down until pump impeller is submerged and fire up the drill. It won't shoot sky high, but if only a couple inches, look at how much is leaking past the housing.

The above ought to keep you busy..

Pick up screen and passages clear.
The head and components are clear, clean and tuorqed right.
Thermo is new and if out it still doesn't produce.

Will try the drill trick and see what happens??

THANKS!!!

A problem with earlier versions, eg my 1984 model, is that corrosion of the inner exhaust tube causes the grommet at the top of the water tube to be become squashed over end of the tube, restricting the water flow, eventually cutting it off completely.

May or may not apply to the '92 model

Try connecting a hose to the water tube to see if you can get a good flow

and/or poke a stiff wire up the water tube. If you feel something resilient at the top that's your trouble! You should hit solid metal at the top.
