If I went to a block water pump, do I still need the drive pump to cool the drive? some say it cools and others say take it out,its only used to cool the motor.
Thanks!

Depends on the water temp of where you boat. You may be able to get away with a drive shower or nothing at all.

All the research in the world won't help, just put on the fresh water cooling system and run it and see what the temperature does. It should stay around 180° to 185° on long trips, not just at idle on a trailer and muffs.
I'm not sure how old your engine is, but the new heat exchanger could also plug up on you from the rust and corrosion already in the engine about a 50/50 chance. The problem there is you can't clean out the heat exchanger if it does clog.

The Impellor in the leg should remain functional and the hose blocked off.
The reason for this is the upper bearing in driven gear is cooled by the water that is routed up the back of the drive..as Don said you can use a Drive shower, but to me its not worth the risk, that bearing runs really hot

Im putting a full fresh water system on the motor and need the block water pump for more water and easier impeller change.
