Ok I have a 1971 evinrude 60 hp model 60173e. I need to know if water is supposed to come out of the two ports located at top of mid section. Ive heard yes and no and even sometimes. Im in the middle of a water pump rebuild and want to know because i have never seen water come out here before. Also when i droped the lower unit the seal between the lower unit and mid section had been inproperly installed. Would this be why water didnt come out in the for mentioned holes if it should.

Re: cooling help

The two ports you mentioned are for high speed bypass water flow from the poppet valves (thermostat housing). At idle, there should be some exhaust and fine mist of water from these ports.

Is this the rubber seal for the exhaust inner housing? If so, then that could effect the balance of exhaust gases in the system. For that seal, you need to clean the end of the exhaust housing and gasket with acetone or some other cleaner to make them oil free. Glue the gasket on with contact cement. This will keep the gasket from becoming dislodged and pinched when reinstalling the lower unit.
