I have a '94 5.0lx with alpha 1 gen 2. New boat to me. Had the bellows, shift cable, and gimbal replaced.

I was saving the impeller because I want to start doing the work myself. I'm not sure when it was last done, so it's due.

Over the weekend at the lake, toward the end of the day it would start to heat up during long idles. If I sped up even slightly or ran the RPM up to 1200, it would cool down to normal quickly. So I'm pretty confident I new to do te impeller before the next outing.

If I broke any pieces off the impeller and they went into the engine, do I need to pull anythig else to make sure there are no fragments anywhere?

Could be in several places that water flows and can be different depending on whether your boat has fresh water cooling or is raw water cooled.

Maybe instead of worrying about that right now, pull the impeller out and take a look at it, the water pump housing and all the gaskets for wear. Since you don't know when it was last replaced (just like when I first did both my boats) I would consider replacing with the full water pump kit so you know for sure your starting with all new parts.
Then fire it up on a hose, raise to 1,000 rpm and see if it stays cool or not and go from there.
