cooling issue

I purchased a 2000 monturay montura 186 with a 4.3gl with a volvo penta sx-m 1.79 ratio outdrive ser#4112074987. First time out it hot a few minutes in. When i bought it i hooked up on water muffs and it ran fine and was peeing water out of drive fine. I now realize this was due to the positive pressure from the hose. My question is does the drive have and impeller in it? It has the circulation pump on engine and also has the "raw water" pump below that to the left that has a hose running to the outdrive and the thermostat housing. When i ran hot it melted the rubber exhaust hoses and i have them ordered just waiting on them. Dont want to pull outdrive apart if not necessary any help will be appreciated. I have also ordered a mechanics manual. Thanks

There is no pump in the outdrive, Volvo pumps are always engine mounted. Yours should be mounted to the front of the crankshaft.

Also, post either the full model number or the serial number of your engine, the one you posted is for the drive and not much help.

There is no pump in the outdrive, Volvo pumps are always engine mounted. Yours should be mounted to the front of the crankshaft.

Also, post either the full model number or the serial number of your engine, the one you posted is for the drive and not much help.

Thanks Don the engine # is 4110194374 also a number 3868941 on the tag. I just pulled raw water impeller and seems to be brand new, on the housing where the hoses connect to pump seem to swivel. The previous person put silicon around where the tubes swivel, is this normal?

You have a 4.3GLPWTC or R, which is a 99 model engine. That's why I always ask for model or serial numbers. Year of the boat is just that, and not always the same as the engine and drive package. Very common in boats.
The pump information is probably the same, here is for the WT model.

So what do you think about the housing? I took the themostat housing off and found a small peice of a old impeller in the housing. Im gonna put new thermostat in and put it back on. I put muffs on outdrive and seem to be getting plenty of water through hose. I guess i am to the point of waiting on new hoses and bellows to try it.

Missed that the first time. You need a new pump to fix that. It's sucking air, and causing your overheat. The sillycone may have worked for a while, but it's only a temporary fix.

A new pump is expensive (but will definitely solve your problem) I would be inclined to get the pump housing off and clean it and then araldite the plastic pipe bit back in place. Much cheaper and will probably work. Your choice.

when i took impeller off i noticed that there was no sealing ring or the bushing in front of the impeller. are these necessary or were they left out on purpose? thanks

ok guys need a little more help where is my exhausting water suppose to come out at? out of the foot or under the exhaust hose

At tick over it will mainly come from the perforations in the exhaust hose, however if you rev it a little some will come out of the prop.

BTW do not put an "O" ring in without removing the old one, as was done by a previous poster on this forum. The "O" ring is in a recess on the base of the pump that remains on the crank pulley. And the bushing you mention I presume is the little flat disc of rubber, I have not seen one of these for a long time, it would appear they are not needed.

well guys boat is running great. The impeller looked new. I epoxied the raw water pump housing and put in a new thermostat. I really appreciate the help.
