AS you know i got the Johnson ('62 40HP) running. Runs fine, but i'm not sure whether its cooling or not.

I have it started up in a bucket with the water an inch or 2 below the cavitation plate.

I did not see anything coming out the exhaust relief hole. But i'm not sure whether the motor is deep enough in water?

Also, rite after i started it, i removed the thermostat and it was open, and then when i went to replace it it was closed again. I guess this varifies that the stat is working.

by the way, steam came out when i removed the thermostat. i'm hoping its just not deep enough under water?

someone please respond we are hoping to take this boat to our cottage in about 30min to and hour so i need to know!

Thanks guys i really apprciate your help i love this website.

Poor thing will never pump water if you submerge it in "water an inch or 2 below the cavitation plate". The water pump is about 5 inches above the cavitiation plate and in order to work needs to be primed and that means it needs to be under water. Running the pump dry is a death sentence for it as water is its lubricant.

f***. atleast i havnt run it to long...... if i spray water up the relief hole will that hurt anything in the process of preventing anything from blocking the passageways??

its ok, i think i found something else. i removed the thermostat, the thermostat "housing", and the plunger underneath had 2 plastic elastics tangled up in the spring, so i removed those and sprayed water down the passageway and saw the water come out the bottom of the motor :)

so if anything was clogging it its not clogged now.

but what i meant before was to spray pressurized water up the exhaust relief hole where water spits out.. in case anything was blocking the passage way but i wasnt sure if i would wreck/hurt/damage anything.

Spraying water into the exhaust system does run the risk of forcing water into the cylinders, not good
