Thanks for all the help in advance, we are boating on a budget and I’m trying to have this fixed up before my wedding this summer but cash is too tight right now to let a shop do it all.

Boat: 1974 searay SRV 200 188HP mercruiser Ford 302. Located in Northen Ohio, Indian lake

Back story. This boat broke down about a year ago in the water, long story short pulled the lower (and replaced the impeller) thinking that was bad but rather the cupler went bad and we had a mom and pop shop fix it. When we tried to winterize it with antifreeze instead of pulling plugs not knowing the impler wouldn’t pump the antifreeze up we froze the block and poped the freeze plugs. They were replaced with the cupler too this winter.

Issues today: we went to try the boat out again just to find out it’s over heating.

We had every part of the cooling system off at some point and ran on muffs to test after the fact. The fresh water makes it to the thermostats houseing (discovered that the thermostat was missing all toghter and bought a new one from orileys to test). It pumps into the engine driven pump and comes back out the top of the block, although I thought it seemed way too slow of a flow. It pumps into the exhaust manifold and with hoses off It still seemed to come out in all the correct spots.

The block drain plug has a leak but it’s more like fast drips. To be replaced as soon as parts come in.

The first time we hit the red we tried to run it at idle it came back down, But the second test even at idle we hit the top of the green really fast.

My intal thought is that theres a internal blockae in the engine / lower, or the water pump / Impeller are not pushing enough water fast enough to cool.

Any thoughts on where to look, what may be the problem, or if a slow water flow from the impller / pump are common??

Also we had we had some random issues where it had to rev way up before it shifted into forward gear, especially when coming from reverse. It didn’t do it on land hooked up to muffs but I suspect the shift cable needs adjusted or is stretched .

Ayuh,..... Were there any ridges or grooves in the raw water pump housing, when you replaced the impeller,..??

pressure test the block.

the core plugs are not there to pop when freezing to save the block, they are there to get the core sand out of the block.

the fact that you did not properly drain the block and it froze, you most likely have a busted block

I’ll try the hose with the drive off.

Also when I replaced the impeller I had a full rebuild kit that replace the cup for the houseing. I didn’t notice any lines but I wasn’t oooking to hard for them. I can double check when the drive comes off
