cooling system question

I have a 1968 Evinrude Triumph 55hp that I haven't taken out on the water yet. I wanted to test the engine so I bought a motor flusher and hooked it up to the hose and started the engine. I let it run about 10 seconds, but I didn't see the water spray out of the exhaust hole so I shut down. My manual says that it takes some time for the engine to warm up before the water will shoot out in a jet, but I didn't even get a trickle of water. Anyone have any ideas? Should I be concerned? If so what should my course of action be?

Thanks

Re: cooling system question

Let the hose run on the engine for a few minutes before starting, then try again. Keep checking the head temp with your hand. Some older engines had a water baffle that had to fill up before any was expelled. It may be you didn't run it long enough. If the head gets too hot to touch in a minute or so, then suspect flow problems...... :)
