Hi everyone. another noobie question.

I have a plug and cord coming out of the lower unit on my merc.

Is this a tach or a spedo or an overheat warning?

:)

Also... is there some sort of air filter that I need to change on this engine?

Ok. I figured someone would probably ask :) Bt I also thought maybe these things are standard.

Let's start with info. Informed it is a 1977 Mercury 402 40HP outboard with a Thunderbolt Ignition. Long shaft. Pictures attached.

It is jutting out of the lower unit straight up.

ON the front of the lowe unit just above the gear houseing there should be a tiny hole. Blow air in it and it should come out the tube sticking straight up. that is the speedometer tube. pressure comes in the little hole and pushes your speedometer dial around. You can run forever that way. You just wont have a speedometer.

Was that a canada only option? Neither of my 1977, 402s have that feature.

I've had an 89 150, and an 88 60 and they both had it.

I have a speedo on the dash but no cord (tube? cable?)

Is this somethign I can buy at a marina? I would love a speedo. I have a GPS to tell me how fast I am going but....

Sure. It is just a simple small diameter plastic tubing. They usually are not very accurate...I wouldn't get too excited.

I just use my GPS if I really want to know how fast I am going.. but I don;t.... I am sure to be disappointed.
It's nicer when you are out there on the water because it feels so much fster than it is.
I hit 40mph at Bass Lake this weekend and was very excited. But it seemed so much faster. Good for tubing though!

Denfinitely a speedo pickup tube. You'll likely find the small hole at the front of the gearbox will be plugged with debris. A small drill bit, twisted by hand and a little air pressure on the free end of the tube should clear it. I'd agree though, if you already have GPS...no need for the old pitot style.

Where do you go boating? I'm in your area. Just curious, as I'm always looking for new areas to go boating, skiing, tubing with the kids.

Well.. I like goig up to bass Lake... nice area. And Jordan Harbour is nice too. Rice lake...

We go up every year to ake nosbonsing (Near North Bay)

I don;t like Lake Ontario. My boat worries me in there. :) Lake Eri is nice for fishing on a clam day though
