Core plug related question

I'm rebuilding a 71 Evinrude 9.5 carb ( AG 312916) carb and have removed both CORE PLUGS but can not find a way to remove the plastic "filler plug" in the large orifice. It is a plastic material and I am afraid of damaging it if I get too aggressive with it. (there's no replacement for it in the kit) I presume there are orifices behind this plastic plug that I need to get to so they can be inspected and cleaned. I'm having low speed / idle "cough" or miss issues and want to be certain this area has a good cleaning. Any one? Thanks.

Have you tried taking some compressed air and getting it out ??

Yes Sir I have tried that and couldn't budge it. I've used an 'ice pic' like tool to try and lift the outer edge or rim but all I can do is gouge it up some.

Ok, I've had no luck, heating, freezing, picking - it's brittle and chips away if I try prying it away from the casting to loosen it. I'm afraid I'm about to "screw the pooch" with any more digging at it. Can anyone provide an exploded view of what lies behind this "filler plug"? Next step is to try and split the plug by sawing it into sections but I don't want to ruin what may lie underneath. There just seems to be no saving this plug.

Sorry, I don't have a picture handy, but there are several small drilled holes behind the filler plug. You do not want to mess those holes up because they meter the idle fuel and air. So, I would say that since you say the plug is crumbling anyway, just keep crumbling and get it out of there and replace it.

No Title

OK, this is not a 9.5hp carburetor, but the theory of operation is the same. The fuel/air flows sideways through the mixing chamber in a 9.5, thus the filler plug.

Thanks boys. I'm ordering a new filler plug and going to keep working on getting the current one out. I'll report back when I make some progress to that end.

Learned of "LEROY'S RAMBLINGS" from another unrelated post here on site. Found this encouraging and helpful. Wish I had found it sooner!

"[FONT=&quot]There is no aftermarket carburetor kit available for these motors. The BRP part # is 0382048, which includes the float. Available for $30.96 as of 5-2013. I am disappointed in this kit. It comes with, (like most) repair parts for both the early and late carbs but does not come with everything. On this carburetor, there is a 1/2" core plug on the outer part of the carb that is inline with 3 small holes in the carb throat. These holes had to be drilled through the access hole this core plug covers up. However INSIDE and under the core plug is a plastic filler plug #0312909 that is not included. On the one I repaired, it would be impossible to remove this plastic plug without destroying it. Oh yes, this kit also included a old style fuel pump cover gasket and filter screen".

Bingo !

Ok, I had some pictures I wanted to post here to show the condition of the FILLER PLUG after I finally got it out and what lies behind that plug but the site says my photos are "corrupt" and can't post them??? They worked fine on Marineengine.com's site and are posted there.

Ahhh, Nothin finer that a smooth run'in Nine'r !
Had to wait a few days for the new plug and gaskets. Replaced the fuel lines during the wait. Reassembled and back in the tank this morning for a test 'run'. Runs great ! No more "cough / sneeze / miss" at idle. Thanks for all the help and support gentlemen.
