I think I have a weak coil. I have a spark tester, and have researched this on the forum, but I am confused. I have seem posts with recommended gaps of 3/8" 7/16" and 1/2". What is the correct gap? Does it matter?

I understand i am looking for a bright blue spark and a loud snap, I'm just not sure about the gap.

In case anyone is looking for one, I found this adjustable spark tester for $8.37 at www.toolparadise.com here is the link:

http://search.cartserver.com/search...abase&maxhits=30&keywords=thextron+404&go=GO!

Hi #7!

usually they say 7/16. But Ive read that some of the older motors like early bigtwins. That 1/4 mabey 3/8 is the best that can be done. Something about the electronics not being as good as the modern units.

Good luck!

I knew I forgot something!
The motor is a 1989 88HP Johnson. Does that fall into the older motor catagory, or should i go with the 7/16?

Thanks Lee!

When Goodoleboy mentioned the older motors, I think he was talking about those that used conventional magnetos for spark inducement. Yours is a CD ignition and should produce a very good spark.
