Can someone tell me what the correct hose diameter is for a 1966 Johnson 6 hp? I was gonna use a 3/8 but my outboard guy said it was too big. Actually I think Im using 3/8 now but I need to extend it to 10 feet. Napa sells bulk fuel line hose and Im also wondering if that is ok or is marine hose different? Last question should the bulb stay back near the tank or near the motor? Thank you. BP

5/16" is the size I think you'll find but what ever is a decent fit!

I have my bulb very close to the tank. Wherever is the most convenient I'd suggest.

Doesn't matter. Use whatever size fits the barbs on your connectors. the 10' length isn't a problem either. Once the hose is full of fuel, the fuel pump can handle it just fine.

I use 3/8" on my 6hp, since that was the barb size on the fittings. My hose is 10' long, and everything works perfectly.

As for the hose type, it may be that the generic fuel hose you're looking at doesn't do well with ultraviolet light, but I don't know. I use automotive fuel hose...it's way cheaper. Just make sure it's fuel hose and not some other type of hose. It should have "fuel" printed along its length.
