Correct name for rubber tube coming off of exhaust elbow?

Hey everyone,

I just needed a confirmation on a tube that I need to order.

I believe am dealing with the exhaust manifold and exhaust elbow (Circled in the picture). To the rear of that, is a rubber tube that connects to the exhaust manifold and exhaust elbow. That rubber tube is what I need to order. I'd say it is about 4 inches in diamter and has a buldge in the middle of the tube. The tube is probably around 6 inches in length.

I recently discovered that I have a small crack in that tube and water is coming out of it. At higher RPM's, more water comes out.

I believe this is what is causing my boat to run hot when cruising on the water. I believe the name of the tube is the exhaust elbow bellow? Is that correct?

I guess what confuses me is that the name exhaust in the part name, but yet the rubber tube connects to the housing where I fill coolant in. And if it is the exhaust elbow bellow...how come water is running through it?

So if you guys could help out in getting me back on track, it would be greatly appreciated it.

Thanks!

I believe it's just called exhaust hose. If you have a special piece of hose it may be called an "exhaust tube", but generally it is just hose that is cut to length.
The "exhaust bellows" is between the out drive and the gimbal housing.

I am sure it is a specific part you need. Type in what motor you have for exhaust parts and there are many aftermarket and oem parts drawings, among then gotomarine and Barr. There might be a flapper in there also to keep exhaust water from flowing backwards when you slow in water. I would change it while it is apart. (It might be gone).

The large rubber tube connecting the exhaust elbow and reservoir assembly (that you circled) is the engine exhaust bellows shown here: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show.../46.png&inbr=908&bnbr=230&bdesc=EXHAUST+ELBOW
The water that runs through it is the seawater that is exiting the heat exchanger. That water cools the exhaust elbow and exhaust shutters on the way out. From there it exits through the outdrive. While you have it off check the shutters (#6) to make sure they are in good shape. Good luck.

You have it backwards, an overheat due to lack of water is what caused the bellows to crack. It's actually burned up inside.
You need to check the impeller and raw water pump housing in the outdrive. With that little water getting through that it burns up your bellows, you may have damage parts in the drive as well.

Your exhaust elbow/reservoir is 2 completely separate items that do 2 different jobs, made in a single casting.
The exhaust elbow part runs raw water from the heat exchanger out the exhaust which also keeps the rubber parts from burning up from the heat of the exhaust.
The reservoir part supplies antifreeze to the part of the cooling system supplied with water.

This diagram should help you understand what is happening in your cooling system.

Re: Correct name for rubber tube coming off of exhaust elbow?

Don...Thank you for that information and clarifying things. This is by far my favorite hobby. I love just finding something new to learn about and just plain investigate.

The boat fell into my hands when my parents stopped using it. I remember the time we put it in the water when I was 16 (I'm 27 now) and I took it around the lake and it overheated big time. Little did I know the impeller froze up. We got it fixed by a back-yard mechanic who probably did not do the most complete job. I was finally at a point in my life where I could take the boat into my possession and start going through it. It had a major overhaul last year at a certified Mercruiser dealer and they did a lot of work, including a impeller change. I know that I am paying now for the lack of maintenance that was done when we first got the boat. Add in about 8 years of sitting outside.

But I'd say this is a great starter boat for me. It's teaching me a bunch of maintenance and care. Now when I get to the point to buy a new boat, I'll have some good amount of experience and knowledge under my belt.

Stonyloam, Richrab and Stamey...Thank you for your help as well. Everyone's help is very much appreciated!

One more question...

As I was letting it idle and watching the temps...I was looking at the stern drive and where the water exits from the back of the boat. On the right side the water was coming out and hot but there was no water coming out on the left side. Is that correct or is that where I might still not be getting enough water up through the bellows.
