Hello,

I have a 2.3 litre Volvo, aq131 engine. My owners manual says to use 10W40, but my OEM service manual says to use 20W50. Not sure which one is correct. Anyone have any suggestions or updated information from Volvo?

Thanx and have a great day

Rob.

I just go by whatever my engine tells me to use. Mine says use 10w40. Id be worried that 20w50 will be a lil to thick.

I think you need to use special oil over there in Puykitallup anyway don't you?;) Are you on South Hill or are you in the "Big City"?

I think Volvo's recommendations are different for a lot of their engines.

That said, I seem to remember a Consumer Reports article many years ago that said 10W40 shouldn't be used in anything....way too much vi improver.........(oh gawd:eek:.....I should keep my mouf shut lest this become an oil thread!!)

I think their most current info is here:--> http://www.volvo.com/volvopenta/glo...ice/publication_search/publication_search.htm

This is where they suggest oil for drives. .......you'll want to save it to your desktop etc..... It's a PDF http://www.volvo.com/internet/vebiz...9-8342-1a8d54f0f60a&area=VolvoCom+Volvo+Penta

Cheers,

Up on S. Hill by the new sonic drive in..:rolleyes:As far as specials oil, ahh heck if i know i just go by the sticker on the top of the engine and my manual online and in the book still say 10w/40 for the engine, so thats what i used. For the drive i just run straight 30w as recommened by Don. Drive previously had gear lube in it. When that got changed out the drive ran a lot smoother, and didnt make the chunking noise going into reverse.

Thanx Rick. It is just confusing that Vovlo has two different recommendations for the same motor. I think my best bet is to go with 15W40. The owners manual from the site you link says 10W40. So I will ignore what the Service manual says.

And no we do not want to make this into an oil thread. Just needed a little clarification.

Have a great day

Rob.
