I'm new to owning a boat. I have a 1986 25' Wellcraft Fisherman with a Mercury 260 and an Alpha-I outdrive. The gearing so far looks to be 1.42:1 on the outdrive but not positive yet. The propeller pitch is 19 on a Mirage SS prop. From what I've found the boat weighs 4,750 and with people/gear and gas pushing in the 5500-6000 lb range.
The problem I'm having is at full throttle, the RPM is reading 3200 and my speed according to the GPS is 32 mph. If I cut it hard, pulling kids on tube, the engine will rev to about 4800 and will slow down. If I keep it in a circle, it will slow to about 15 mph. Also, it seems to take awhile to go from stop to full speed.
I was wondering what opinions were out there, seems like the pitch is too high, should be more like a 15? I think it should go faster at least in a straight line. Thoughts?
