Hi,
I'm desperately trying to find the correct setting for my Teleflex tach connected to a 1990 Evinrude 90 hp; at wot it's only reading about 5000 rpm at the 6p setting, wich correct me if I'm wrong, is lugging. Right? The problem is the motor sounds like its turning a lot more than 5k. The tech support guy at Teleflex told me that some Evinrudes require the 5p setting; I changed the setting last night and now it reads 5600-5800 rpm at wot, possibly more if I pushed it. I don't want to lug the motor, but also don't want to over-rev it either. How do I know whether the 5p or 6p setting is correct? And if the 6p setting is correct, what do I do to get the rpms a little higher so I don't lug the motor? Thanks..........

Re: correct tach setting please??

6P is correct. It would help to know what style of boat this engine is on, what the current prop diameter and pitch is and what the normal load is. Dropping prop pitch is the LAST thing to do in an attempt to raise RPM. First, make sure the engine is tuned properly. Looking at it is not checking. Compression check, carb rebuilds if it hasn't been done in awhile (if ever) may be needed as well as link & sync. Ensure the throttle cable is properly adjusted and that the throttle plates in the carbs open fully. Check the position of the AV plate in relation to the bottom of the hull. Flush to one or two inches above will gain rpm and speed. Raise the engine mounting one or two holes if necessary. Paying attention to wide open throttle trim settings is also necessary. If all of that still requires some rpm gain then you can try different "styles" of props -- not necessarily dropping in pitch. If that doesn't work then and only then should you drop pitch. I suppose I should mention also that if the boat sits outside (covered or not), you might be lugging around a couple hundred pounds of water soaked foam.

Re: correct tach setting please??

Hi............
It's a Glastron V162 Futura; very good shape and stored inside; prop is 13 1/4 x 17 in. pitch. Since posting this thread, I stopped into my mechanic's shop and told him what was happening--he just rebuilt the powerhead over the winter. He said he would check it out after the upcoming weekend and holiday week as I would be on vacation. Then, tonight I took the boat out to the lake to run it again--ran into him on the lake, so he decided to take a look at it tonight instead of waitng. He made some adjustments, and now its worse than before--no pickup, and it idles terribly--sputters and stalls and is hard to restart and when it does, it smokes like hell. Needless to say, I dropped the boat off to him tonight!! Any suggestions???
