Correct Transducer Position

I am a little confused over the correct postion of the transducer when the boat is in the water. Fish Finder sites all say to have transducer face down when in the water. All diagrams that I have seen show transducer mounted on transom with the unit being mounted parallel to the boat bottom. Is that Face Down? Or do you have to turn the unit in its bracket so that the round portion of the unit is facing straight down in the water? I have a Lowrance Model 50 on my new Smoker Craft boat and I can not get fish arches yet. Any Ideas?

Transducers should point straight down, if they don't then your reading will be off to the side. Even if yours is off to the side a little you should still get fish arches, double check the settings in your unit, I have to turn on fish ID for it to show fish. I take it you do see structure, bottom and other stuff, just no fish.

Im guessing its not in hull or thru hull type.so Is this your type of transducer.? http://www.scubastevesmarine.com/images/p66-50200-bl.jpg If so, it should be parallel to the bottom

Thanks for the information gentlemen:
My Lowrance has Fish ID which of course shows the 3 sizes (small, medium, and large). I always see fish on the screen using Fish ID but when I turn Fish ID off and try to get fish arches is where I am not having much luck. The way the Lowrance is set up you have to turn off Fish ID to be able to see Fish Arches. I guess I will just have to keep playing with it.

It's when they bend their little backs, I am sure of this because they don't have feet.

Unless Fish Finders in the USA are different all the ones in Canada have Fish ID which looks like an actual fish on the screen. The manuals say that Fish ID on is a good way to start but when you get more familiar with the system they say to turn off (disable) Fish ID. You are then supposed to see Fish Arches which looks like horseshoes but not quite a U shape. With the Lowrance they say Fish ID can be inaccurate compared to Fish Arches. Hopes this explains things a bit better for everyone.

To those who are confused about what Fish Arches are another member posted this and it explains it simple and good.

When you have the fish ID turned on about 90% of the fish you see are not really fish. It is junk in the water which can be anything from algae to splinters of wood or other debris. Fish arches are displayed as an actual fish swims through the sonar cone or the sonar cone passes over a suspended fish.
