I have a 1967 Chrysler 55HP Outboard Model #55771 and I was wondering what the correct tune up kit for it? I'm not sure what type of ignition it is or what. The engine cover says its and 55 alternator but the engine only has a stator that recharges the battery and it has two outside coils and the points and condensers under the flywheel, is this known as standard ignition? Is the stator known as a alternator in 1967 or what? Thanks for the help!!

Re: Correct Tune-Up Kit?

There really is no per say tune up kit. If there is a problem with the motor you will need to replace what is bad. Ignition parts are kind of hard to come by and expensive so you dont want to replace stuff if you dont have to. Basic stuff would be replace the spark plugs with Champion L82C plugs. Replace the impeller sierra part number 47-F433065-2 and make sure you drain and fill the lower unit each fall. If motor is not running well you will have to trouble shoot to find the area that is bad. Clymer is a great manual for this motor or chryslercrew.com has downloadable factory manuals for a fee.

Yep! The stator is an alternator. It puts out just enough power through a rectifier to fire the ignition and slowly recharge the battery. You have a standard points ignition so the only real tune up parts are points, plugs, and condensers. They are still available--Go over to Chrysler Crew Franz will know the correct parts. Points are set at .020 gap and there is another thread here on plugs. Each set of points services one coil and one cylinder.
