As soon as the engine starts, the huge red warning light in the center of the dash comes on -- in the manual it says this is an early warning indicator for either high temperature (water???) or low oil pressure (gee, that's a big help correct craft) -- however, both water temp and oil pressure guages appear to be reading acceptable levels -- oil pressure is 40psi at idle and water temp is not over 140 when warmed up...this temp seems low to me so I wonder if it is measuring accurately??

However, since the warning light comes on immediately even when the engine is cold, I wonder if it could be low oil level (appears to be down a quart) .. the PCM manual that came with the boat sucks...it doesn't even tell me where the dipsticks are for the fluids (help?).

The engine has about 220 total hours on it and is the PCM Engine Model PLL TBI 5.7L 275Hp (I've been told its a chevy  ) anybody know where I could get a more detailed manual online?

...I'd also like to know how to check the tranny filter screen...the last time this engine was serviced ... the knuckleheads left the fliter screen out of the sherwood in-line filter  so that may or may not have contributed to what the problem is.

Does anybody know exactly what that "idiot" light measures and where the sensors are located??? I could then pull the sensors one at a time and see what is triggering the light if anything. Lastly, the engine purrs like its brand new, so no help there...

Thanks for any help you can give...great forums...John.

Idiot light senders are separate from gauge senders. Gauge senders vary resistance, light senders are either On or Off. You may have two Overheat senders...one on the motor and one on the transmission. The Low Oil Pressure sender would be on the motor. Typically the motor's Overheat sender is on or near the thermostat housing, and the Low Oil Pressure sender is on the back of the motor near the distributor, or just above the oil filter. Low oil on the dipstick will not cause a Low Oil Pressure situation. If there is NO oil on the dipstick, then it could. Since your light goes on with the key, I'd suspest a sender wire shorted to ground, or a bad Low Oil Pressure sender. Overheat senders need high temperature to turn the light On. Low Oil Pressure senders need oil pressure to turn the light Off.

thanks, so its possible that its measuring the tranny fluid temp??? if so, it could be that the screen to cool the tranny fluid is blocked as a result of the missing screen fiasco...any idea where that screen is? I found where the water runs thru a honeycomb cylindrical filter of sorts that appears to be the oil cooling mechanism but not the tranny screen...

here is an update......tranny fluid is low...tranny filter is clean (it was not the oil cooler but tranny fluid cooler)...impeller, hoses ets are fine...oil level is fine...
