Corrosion - degradation on shiny surfaces

Noticed that several bezels have a damaged finish on the shiny surface.
As an example the VolvoPenta single lever control has a square bezel around it ... with a shiny chrome effect finish.
It's a plastic trim so its not chrome or stainless, same for the bezel on the dash guages. It has dotted and pitted 'corrosion' damage.
Does anybody have a treatment for it, any sanding or polishing is not going to work.

The coating is physically chipping away. The only potential fix I can think of is sand it off and paint it.

In that auto restoration world they have a chrome paint. Not the fake rattlecan stuff but a real 4 or 5 layer process but I bet it aint cheap. Can do black or red chrome colors too

couple of other things that can be done are chrome vinyl wrap, etc

there are also spare parts for VP controls.
