why does it cost so much to get a dealer's mechanic to work on your motor ? when the wrench is not making to much moneey.

overhead,insurance,advertising ,utilities,training,sick days,office staff,parts inventory, tools,<br />etc.etc. the list is endless.

Some one has to pay the rent,taxes,lights, water, laundry,some tools, equiptment, addvertizing,insurance and last but not least, hopefully profit. This profit thing here in America is a bad deal. You have to make one or you can't be in business. Not fair is it?

When choosing to get a repair done or do it yourselves, you have to consider:<br /><br />Are you capable of and do you like doing it yourselves ? Do you have the time to do it.<br /><br />The dealers has to take his time to troubleshoot your motor, talk to you and calculate an estimate for the repair, time he cant put on your bill.<br /><br />Besides he has to pay all of the above, educate his staff, replace the ones that quits etc ect.<br /><br />Many dealers give a kind af warranty for repairs, and have to be sure your motor is fixed when they are done.<br /><br />To do all of above, they have to calculate a little extra.<br /><br />But apart from that, of coarse noone likes to get ripped off

I own a lumberyard and get the same thing..charge 3.00 for a 2x4 and I made 3.00...even after giving the customer a 10% discount and paying my driver to drive my 5mpg stake truck 20 mi. one way to deliver it so his crew doesn't have "down time" and lose him money. After expenses and taxes (matching soc. sec.& medicare, sales, state and fed. income, Mich. single business,property,inventory) lucky to net 3% of sales as profit...can't afford to be a democrat!

This reminds mee of a story of a farmer. His harvester was making a strange sound, getting worse and worse. At last, he HAD to call a repair man. The guy listened to the sound, found a big hammer in his toolbox, and hit the running machine once hard on an axel, and immediately the sound was gone. How much is that, the farmer asked ? 250 $ the serviceguy replied. 250 $ FOR ONLY ONE PUNCH !! Noe - thats only a $, the 249 is for knowing where to hit.

that is why you need to be able to do most things yourself. $65/hr labor adds up fast.All too often, it is not done correctly anyway from many shops.<br /><br />Carb cleaning and rebuild $400, parts = $40<br />LU seal $100, parts = $7<br />water pump job = $150. parts = $25<br /><br />Get manual from public library, buy DVA ($60) and never look back. Be the envy of your friends.<br />,
