I have a 1993 johnson venom 225 that lost compression in a cylinder and i pulled the cover off to look at the top of the pistons and one piston was beat up on the top and chipped a little on the outside and scared the walls just a bit. Other than that i dont know what else it may need. What would be a ballpark figure for a rebuild on this motor.
Thnaks

Re: cost of rebuilding

Basscat1, I just received an estimate to have my Evinrude 150 rebuilt. The price was roughly $1500 to $2000 parts and labor. my motor is a 1986 year. So I would guess at least that for yours. Let me know

Check this website (bottom of page) for rebuilt powerheads. You need to know what caused failure, so it doesn't repeat with a rebuild.

Re: cost of rebuilding

So your saying there could actually be something outside the powerhead, say power pack or something like that that would blow a cylinder?
Thanks

Re: cost of rebuilding

99 times out of 100 it is something outside the powerhead that caused the failure. The damaged piston is a result , now the quest is on to find the cause .

It could be as simple as the wrong spark plugs. Or a dirty carb. It could be a little trickier to find like a double firing pack. It could be a center hub flywheel magnet, a bad timer base and so on.

Good luck!
