Costly Voltage regulator ?

Mercury 1988, Magum 2, OC126425 motor with 40amp regulator p/n 18376A15? Costly is there another option?

If its definately bad...
I'd try removing the potting epoxy and repair it, its only made from cheap parts. The problem could be nothing but a burnt land on the circuit board.
