Could grease cause a trigger problem?

I have been troubleshooting a problem with no spark on my 650 3 Cyl Merc. <br /><br />Testing strongly indicates the problem is with the trigger. <br /><br />I removed the trigger and noted that there was a lot of grease and oil on most of the surfaces inside the distributor cap.<br /><br />Question... Could this grease and oil affect the trigger process?<br /><br />If so, I will clean and re-install it and run the tests again. Otherwise I will order a new one.<br /><br />pwp.

Nope, the trigger works by a magnetic effect and grease will not have any effect on it.

It needs to be clean inside your cap for max preformance. It could cause A misfire though!
