... for my marriage, anyway. I went to an auction over the weekend that had advertised about 20 boats and 30 motors, plus a bunch of trailers and miscellaneous. I ended up coming home with one boat and a few boxes of the miscellaneous. I think I paid the most of any boat there - $50! Most of the boats were going for $10-$20. Some had clean titles, some didn't. Some needed a good weekend's worth of cleaning and minor repairs, some needed a Sawzall. As it was, I was sorely tempted to put bids in one four or five other boats, but didn't.
They had 15-foot Starcraft aluminum runabouts, c.late 1960s going for $10. A 1964 Larson runabout with 35hp Merc for $20. A 18-foot Dorsett runabout with MerCruiser went for $15. A PennYan with OMC power went for $10. Ohhh, the temptation....
The one I DID buy is a 1982 Sea Sprite tri-hull open bow. It had the remnants of a 1984 Johnson 90hp with PT&T on it. No lower unit and bits and pieces of a blown powerhead. The boat is solid, but quite dirty with leaves and twigs. The upholstery isn't bad - could probably get away with replacing some of the under-boards and restapling where needed. Should be a good winter project - on top of the 18-foot Starcraft I bought last Spring.
Should have pics soon...
- Scott

I have to go with Wimperdink on this one, chinewalker. I may have flown across the country and brought a U-haul back for this one. I moved 2 boats out last week, and I'm down to the Reinell and a rebuild. That's a yard that's just primed and yearning for more junk. :)
As a side note, I came across the pics of your starcraft rebuild, chine. I'm considering stealing your paint scheme, though with different colors. That looks fairly sleek, and I'm pretty confident that I can draw out the lines to paint at home. We'll see, though.

Hi SFS,
That's actually the original paint scheme, or rather Gelcoat. The black is a vinyl sticker that covers the seam between the blue and the white gelcoat. It is sharp, though. Thanks! Steal away....

- Scott

You have just described my personal fantasy land, where people don't think their wretched rotted hulks are worth 4 digit numbers like where I live. I envy the east coasters, they have a gazillion cheap boats there. There are a gazillion boats where I live, but people have unrealistic expectations of worth...

I think one of the boats at the auction may be available now. The boat I bought came on a trailer. I wanted the boat, another guy wanted the trailer, so we split it up.

Anyway, he bought another rig for the trailer. It had a VIP (Bayliner clone?) on it with a Force 120. I bought the motor, but didn't want the boat. It's a project, as the interior has been pretty much gutted. Maybe a 18-footer or so? The transom seems solid at first check - will know more when I pull the motor off it this weekend. The outside of the hull looks okay, faded, but not abused, and the windshield isn't banged up. If anyone is interested I can put in in contact with the guy who has it. He won't want much for it, I can tell you that... might even give it to you. Don't know if he got the title with it or not...

I hope the mods don't view this as a for sale ad - just trying to help a buddy get rid of something that will likely just be junked...
- Scott

Took some pics of the boat I bought, plus another from the sale that is a FREEBIE to anyone who wants to come and get it!
Mine is the Sea Sprite. I started cleaning it up a bit this weekend, scooping the wet leaves and twigs out and mopping out the last of the puddle in the ski locker. I even went so far as to spray a little 409 on the deck and it actually started to clean up pretty good!
The seats will need some attention as the bases are rotten, but the upholstery itself isn't too bad. The boat is now indoors and drying out.

- Scott

And here is the free boat. I bought the motor off it, so that is no longer on the boat, but the rest is pretty much as you see it. No trailer included I think I figured it out as a 1986 VIP Victory, about 18-foot long. The cockpit has been gutted - no seats, what upholstery is left is pretty bad, floor is soft in spots. Located in Northern New York State... Come and get it!
- Scott
