The OMC master model listing shows there are 4 different model number for Evinrude 60 hp engines that year: 60072B 60072D 60073B 60073D.
OMC's master book is not any more specific that just that information. You might be able to check out the OMC original factory parts lists variances on their factory website: epc.brp.com. With you engine in front of you, you could compare the 4 parts lists with your engine. Some major differences you may easily find: tiller handle vs remote control, short shaft engine vs long shaft, even electric start vs pull cord. Generally, I think you'll find most of the major parts are identical, in terms of carbs, powerhead and ignition components.

Simply post a picture of ther area just above where the lower unit bolts on.-------Short shaft is fairly rare...-----There must be better motors than that as a candidate for restoration !!

From the rear view shot, it appears to be a long shaft (20-inch transom height). Is there a tag on the clamp bracket? If so, it'll have the model number on it.

Long/short shaft question is simple. Measure it!!! From where it rests on transom, down to cavitation plate will be approximately 15" for short shaft and 20" for long shaft. Actually just a bit more than those figures. But it won't come up a whole 5 inches off.

It looks like more than one model year. Two different colors of green paint. Also lots of $$ ignition/electrical problems. Lotsa luck.

Bet it's a 20" like Chinewalker says! To measure like described above in F_R's post, would need the gearcase -- but guess the plate would be about an inch below the bottom of the leg as shown. Measure from the mounting point on the transom to the bottom of that leg, and add about an inch(?)

Before you get into ANY repairs check to see that the selectric shift works correctly. When they go bad they are almost non-repairable and most people (collectors, repairmen, etc,) stay away from them. As an old engine they (that design) are simply not worth the hassle.

Heh, I didn't look at the one picture. No lower unit. Do you have it? Obviously it won't be doing much shifting. And yeah, it is a Johnnyrude, part Johnson and part Evinrude. And part missing. Speaking of "part", it looks like a parts motor. Certainly not worth rebuilding unless you have a box of spare parts stashed away. The year/model is a moot question, call it whatever you want.

Do power heads interchange between manual or electric, if that becomes relevant (use of the powerhead on another project)? Got to believe the block would substitute either way, but maybe not.

I suspect Ninja has no plans to use this motor, most likely a strip down and part it out or sell off as is as a parts motor.

Perhaps a little cleanup 1st

For parts consideration, it looks like the t.stat cover was a unique part used between '68 and '71 -- suggests that some parts swaps between those years might work (call it a weak suggestion -- 55 and 60hp). You could look further for shopping, swapping or parting out.

The thermostat cover is a part used on 60072 and 60073, 2 is a short shaft and 3 is the long
