I have a 1990 8 HP Mercury.

Bought a new throttle cable for it since the one on it was broken when I bought it. But I am having some trouble remembering how it was configured. I spent an hour or two trying to figure it out but there is either to much slack in the lines or they are too tight and I am only able to get one on...

A few pictures from a phone would really help me out here...

Thanks!

Yeah, those push-pull throttles ain't much fun, are they!

The best way I've found to get 'em installed correctly is to back off the adjuster nuts all the way in the direction that gives the most slack in the cables.

Then, before you put the cables in their little holders and tighten 'em down, get the ends into the holes/slots in the throttle/shift cam. It'll help if you hold the cable end with a pair of needle-nose pliers and use the pliers to work the small end into it's hole.

Word of caution: be absolutely sure you know which one pulls to shift/throttle up Fwd and which one pulls the other way. Once it's all back together, don't get the cable adjustments too tight or the throttle/shift will bind.

HTH & enjoy!.........ed

Figured it out. Took a break and came back to the project with a clear mind and it help tremendously.

Also helps to start off in the neutral position on both the tiller handle and the head/block. Wasn't easy and almost felt like I was gonna snap the dam thing when I finally got it. Which would have been a bummer since the only one I could find was in Australia and took 3 weeks to get here, talk about nerve racking :faint2:
