Couple Cobra outdrive questions

1988 Four Winns with an OMC Cobra outdrive.

First: The trim pump runs, but it's not raising or lowering the outdrive. I have seen NO leaks. How do I check the hydraulic fluid, and if it's full, what problem might I have run into?

Second: I need to clean and paint the outdrive unit. This looks to be a major PITA while it's on the hull. Can I disassemble the major components into a few smaller pieces so I could clean and paint it? Do I need to remove the outdrive completely? Can I do that without pulling the motor?

There is a plug you need to pull on the trim pump cup. Fill until it runs out. Cycle the pump to bleed out the air. I would not pull the drive just to paint. I would however pull it and change the bellows and check alignment. Then you can paint away.

The fill hole on that pump is just a flat head screw.
Raise the drive all the way up if possible and tie it up or support it in some way BEFORE you take that screw out.
I use a turkey baster to fill them. Fill it and see if it starts working.
If so run it up and down several times and repeat the fill method.
Those are self purging pumps.

To paint the drive just pull it off...6 nuts on the upper and 2 nuts holding the aft end of the trim rams...15 minute job and a great time to inspect the bearing and grease the 2 zerk fittings on the u-joints..
