First off I just bought a boat a 1980 seaswirl w/ omc 140 h.p. Doing a model number search I have come up with it being a OMC Stringer 140 Model# 981871.
Now the boat is sitting too forward on the trailer wich meant when I lowered the trim it hit the rubber roller on rear of trailer. Could this have caused any damage? Once i saw the motor shift a little I stopped. Also while resting on this rubber roller (not knowing) I attempted to turn the steering wheel wich was hard to turn due to the fact it was hitting the trailer roller. I realized something was wrong so I went to rear of boat and saw what looked to me like some power steering fluid had leaked out. Now i assume since it was jammed up on the trailer it may have forced some fluid out. I raised the trim off the rubber roller on the trailer and wiped off the red fluid and turned the wheel back and forth and saw no more fluid leak. Shuold it be okay? Also any tips on this stern drive would be appreciated.

Where exactly did you see this "fluid"?

There are no hydraulics on Stringer 400 series outdrives. The use an eletro-mechanical setup to raise and lower the drive. (TILT) and on your boat I believe an electro-mechanical screw jack to raise and lower the engine to adjust the TRIM.
Some models have power steering, but that has nothing to do with the drive itself.

Yeah, that's odd - no red fluids should be in a 400 series drive, or any of it's related equipment.
You need to do some reading .. get a manual, and find the 4 level check plugs for your drive (Intermediate, upper, and lower housings, and tilt clutch) and check the drive oil levels before EVERY use of the boat.

Where exactly did you see this "fluid"?

It was on the stern and some on trailer and ground around trailer. I was assuming the fluid came from when I attempted to turn wheel while outdrive was jammed up on trailer roller. Also what is the difference between tilt and trim? The stern moves up and down on what looks like a electric motor and gear.

The tilt is all external. The drive is only intended to be operated in the full down position. If you have 'tilt', the mechanism will all be inside the boat, and moves the front of the engine and drive assy, up or down, as a unit.

Kagee, could he be leaking tilt fluid, from inside, out thru the drain plug in the transom?

The fluid came from the stern above the drain plug.

Not being able to see it, makes it hard to guess.

You have gear oil in the intermediate unit that attaches to the engine.

You have gear oil in the drives upper unit and lower unit.

You have regular oil in the tilt gearbox (that drives the big quadrant gear)

All those are sealed. None are pressurised.

At the moment, I don't see how your attempt to turn the drive would cause leakage. The leakage point has to be visible. You have a bad seal somewhere. A pressure test of the upper and lower drive units are in order, as well as an inspection of the tilt housing.

I haf the stern lifted yesterday and left it up and went out this morning and found some more red fluid on the ground. Could this be power tilt fluid?
