Couple questions about 88SPL

i have a 1988 Johnson SPL 90hp. we had it out this weekend with two glitches..

1. when the boat was in neutral or shifting into gear it would shut off and have a hard time turning back on.

2. the motor jumped alot like it kind of knocked like it was kicking in and out of gear when it was at lower rpms.

3. I had the boat doing about 25 mph at 4800 RPM with 3 people(400lbs) now someone said here i should be able to get the boat to at least 35 to 40 and to find the rpms. i was just wondering if that speed sounds right for the rpms.

1. No, you should be able to shift in and out of gear without the engine stalling. Might be time to do some maintenance checks, spark, compression and fuel delivery. When was the last time the engine was tuned up?
2. Does the lower unit oil have any metal particles in it? Sounds like the clutch dog is jumping in and out of gear.
3. It sounds like the engine is not making horse power, refer to the ansewer to question #1.

Ok so i got the motor how.. check compression.. 2 on the port side are at 90 the top on the starboard is 100 and bottom 80 so theres something there that needs to be figured out.. i will check spark next. fuel delivery is great to the carbs which are now being cleaned.. ill check the lower unit later.. i have a quick video hard to see but it if you look at the fuel like u can see how the engine wiggles back and forth

I bet if you did a good decarb, the compression might even out. From what I seen on the video it didn't seem to idle all that bad.

it seemed like it would be fine in the water when it wasnt running for a while than once it warmed up for a while it would actup.. im going to put everything back and try the compression test again.. also will check spark today
