I have a 91 Force 120 and goofed by turning the shift shaft while changing the impeller. f/n/r still work but this seem a little off. I think I may have turned the shift shaft while doing so. Would this be a sign of a cam style mechanism.

NO! Shift shaft on Mercury lower units have detents for F-N-R. If you had turned it, you would feel it and would no longer be able to shift into one gear. besides: the shaft is splined at the top. Was your shaft splined?

After looking at the manual closer it might be call the lower shift rod that got loosed.

The 91 has the older style Force shift.
You remove the set screw?
If so the lower unit probably needs to be taken apart???
