Hi All! Have just re-installed my 1974 140 HP Mercruiser engine to get ready for summer. Engine serial # 3826715. Drive serial # 3843829.
The engine went back in easy but I have a problem with the alignment bar not fitting into the splines in the coupling, even with the engine again removed with straight access at the coupling.
The coupling on the engine is 32492A5. The inside diameter of the splines appears to be approx. 23.8mm or 0.930". The splines all appear to in good condition with no damage or "flogging" that I would expect with the reduced inside diameter.
I have another coupling, which I assume is 76850A2, which I can fit if need be.
See pic of both couplings.

The questions I have are:
1. Were the early model couplings a different inside diameter?
2. If I use the later coupling will I need to change the drive shaft from the 8" shaft to the 9"+ shaft?
