I'm disassembling/rebuilding a 1979 20hp Merc. I'm using the Seloc manual. I've managed to get the lower unit off (LOTS of hammering and wooden wedges).
I'm at the stage of removing the Cover nut behind the prop and I think I need a "Cover Nut Tool". Where would I find one, or is there an alternative to buying one?
I saw this one on ebay but I'm not sure if it would fit my engine....any thoughts?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4526337133&category=26455

Re: Cover Nut tool?

hello
you will find that tool is useless for the nut removal if that motor has seen saltwater. I usually drill 3 holes in the nut and crack them out. the tool or a homemade one will be required to install a new nut. the nut is made of cast aluminium and will break apart rather easy. take care not to drill damage the case threads.
