I have never worked on a boat motor before and have very little knowledge of doing so except for what I read here and common sense things. I want to replace the coils on my 1954 Evinrude 15 HP motor but can't seem to get the cover off to get to them. Is there a trick or a special tool I need to get it off?
There is a key in the shaft that I can see, is there some easy way to get that out? Any help here would be great. I want to get this motor back on the lake after sitting 25 years in my basement.

The "cover" is called a flywheel. When you get ready to reinstall it, make sure the shaft and flywheel tapers are clean and dry and use a torque wrench to thighten the nut to 40-45 ft/lbs (on that motor). Don't you even dare think you can guess at it good enough. I can't and I've done a bazillion of them.

Thanks for your help, I need to buy a wheel puller tomorrow along with brake pads for my car and a muffler for my wifes van. I'm gonna be busy for awhile:eek:

Just make sure you have your priorities right. And then you can take care of the cars. Rick.
