Re: cowl insulation

Nappa has this flame resistant foam that I have used, its thinner than the factory stuff but I like it, it cuts easy with scissors or razor knife & looks nice, its dark gray in color, scrape off old, spray inside with 3m spray can glue, then apply new foam. another option is to go to a sporting goods store and buy a sleeping bag fommy, they due to safety regs are supposed? to be flame resistant. and they are cheap. and as you say you can just leave the hood with no foam, I have done this a time or 2. but I take some cheap rattle can paint a paint the inside just to glue any remaining foam bit securely.

Out with the old as soon as possible. Try it without and see if you are OK with it. If not there are a lot of options available. NAPA is a good place to start or even an online search will be a help.

Re: cowl insulation

get rid of it fast.
once its old it can start getting pulled into the carbs due to the hoover effect.
if you think its too noisey then fine go ahead and just get some cheap foam and re-glue it in.
To be honest it dont realy make much difference to sound as if your going quick it will be sound behind thats gone
if your just trolling the noise is minimal anyway.

On salt water the original foam is terrible and many people just get rid of it asap before it gets into the engine.

Look for a "fabric & foam" place in your area. They often have flame retardant stuff & will save you a bunch of money. I'd recomend the 3M77 spray. It's working on both of mine so far. (about 4 years on one...knock on wood)
