Cowl on causes stalling

OK, I had really good luck adjusting the carburator and figured out the mystery screw on the tower is for idle speed and in gear speed.

However, I found out last night when I put the cowl cover on, it starts sputtering and dies which I think is lack of air.

My question is, are there any air vents on the cowl or are there some on the motor that I need to check? I suspect whatever air passages are there got clogged. It doesn't immediately die, takes about 30 seconds or so to run out of it...

It sounds like your exhaust bellows either is not connected properly or is broken. You will find this on the back of the engine, inside the leg. It connects the exhaust to the two little reliever ports on the back of the leg.

If this is broken or disconnected, exhaust gas will be sucked into the intake and the engine will quit after a while.

John

it could be a case that the boot just slipped off. might be an easy fix.

That would explain the smell, although the water does cavitate with the engine running so at least some of it is making it down there. When you say "leg" do you mean down in the lower unit?

yes he means down the lower unit. its the space that looks like a leg between the motor and the lower unit

Excellent, thanks!

I can kill two birds with one stone now too cause the lower unit leaks fluid and water gets in there also.

If you are going to take the lower off, you might as well change the water pump as well. No sense pulling it off again in a few months.
